"Waiting For" brings together works in textile, painting, video, and soft sculpture.
Kavachi, an artist of Anatolian background based in Hamburg, has been working at Artists Unlimited in Bielefeld since early February. The exhibition presents unpublished and ongoing works developed during this residency. Through a queer gaze, the works explore transformation, hiding as a strategy for survival, and fragments of states of waiting. Uncanny spaces and figures emerge from one another, shifting and overlapping to produce new meanings. “The greatest source of our suffering is the lies we tell ourselves,” Elvin Semrad – a thought that resonates with the works’ explorations of self-deception, protection, and the fragile narratives we construct to endure.
During the residency, Kavachi has been collecting plush toys and furry garments – a process that will continue throughout the exhibition. Visitors are welcome to bring and contribute their own plush toys or furry garments to this unfolding collection.
