Momentum of its Own. Historical Dynamics in Premodern East Asia
Panel Discussion
Roundtable with Timothy Brook, Marion Eggert, Achim Mittag and Jörg Quenzer in contex of the ZiF research group „Momentum of Their Own. Analogue Structures of Change in Pre-Modern East Asia and Europe“
on site and online
For a long time, it was assumed that a special dynamic of change could be observed in Europe since the Middle Ages, which would have laid the foundation for its rise in the 19th and 20th centuries. In the meantime, historians from other regions of the world, especially China, have claimed their own path to modernity for their country. These views are not least a manifestation of the ever-present need for regional exceptionalism. But how can pre-modern change in different regions of the world be understood?
