read to/for | I read to sense the doubling of time

Die Gruppenausstellung read to/for – I read to sense the doubling of time versammelt Arbeiten von Anna Budniewski, Christine Sun Kim, Brandon LaBelle, Karolin Meunier, Luzie Meyer, Miriam Stoney und Anna R. Winder und reflektiert in Verbindung mit dem titelgebenden Satz der Dichterin Lisa Robertson Lesen als künstlerische Praxis. 

Lesen wird dabei als Raum zeitlicher Überlagerungen verstanden, in dem Bedeutung beweglich bleibt, und sich im Vollzug der Lektüre immer wieder neu aktualisiert. Unterschiedliche Zeitlichkeiten – die des Textes und die der Lektüre – treten in ein Verhältnis von Gleichzeitigkeit und Nachträglichkeit und bilden rhythmische Bewegungen von Differenz und Nachhall. Lesen erscheint dabei als eine Form des inneren Hörens, geprägt von Rhythmus, Wiederholung, Stimme und Resonanz, und damit als ein Takt aus Pausen und Wiederkehr, der den Leseakt als auditive und multisensorische Erfahrung erfahrbar macht.

In diesem Zusammenhang eröffnet die Ausstellung die diesjährige Auseinandersetzung des Kunstverein Bielefeld mit dem Sinnesorgan des Ohrs und dessen Verbindung zum Lesen und zu Formen des (Zu-)hörens.

Die künstlerischen Positionen arbeiten jeweils mit Text als Bestandteil ihrer Praxis und verbinden Lese- und Schreibpraktiken mit Installation, Video und Sound. Die Ausstellung versteht sich als ein Prodkutions- und Experimentierraum, in dem installative Setzungen, Lesungen und Performances in wechselnde Konstellationen treten.

The group exhibition read to/for – I read to sense the doubling of time brings together works by Anna Budniewski, Christine Sun Kim, Brandon LaBelle, Karolin Meunier, Luzie Meyer, Miriam Stoney, and Anna R. Winder, and reflects on reading as an artistic practice in connection with the exhibition’s title phrase by the author Lisa Robertson.

Reading is understood here as a space of temporal overlap in which meaning remains fluid, and constantly re-actualized as the process of reading takes place. Different temporalities intersect in the act of reading: the time of the text, but also the time of reading itself — enter into a relationship of simultaneity and belatedness, forming rhythmic movements of difference and resonance. Reading thus emerges as a form of inner listening, shaped by rhythm, repetition, voice, and resonance, and therefore as a cadence of pauses and returns that renders the act of reading an auditory and multisensory experience.

In this context, the exhibition opens this year’s exploration by Kunstverein Bielefeld of the sensory organ of the ear and its connection to reading and forms of listening.

Each of the artistic positions engages with text as an integral part of its artistic practice, combining reading and writing practices with installation, video, and sound. The exhibition conceives of itself as a space for production and experimentation in which installations, readings, and performances enter into shifting constellations.
