Ida Nikou (Universität Heidelberg): "War Before War: Sanctions and Accumulation under Constraint in Iran"
Vortrag im Rahmen der öffentlichen Vortragsreihe "Kapitalismus und Krieg" der AG Internationale Beziehungen & Politische Ökonomie
How should we understand the relationship between war and capitalism in a country that has been subjected to decades of economic sanctions, financial exclusion and recurrent military threat? This talk argues that war in Iran cannot be treated simply as an external shock to an otherwise normally integrated national economy with unrestricted market access. Sanctions had already reshaped how capital accumulates, how commodities circulate, and how Iran is tied into the world economy long before any direct military confrontation began. The Iranian case raises a larger question for critical political economy: how should we conceptualise the relationship between imperialistic coercion and capitalist restructuring? Rather than treating sanctions, economic adaptation and military conflict as separate processes, the talk examines how they become intertwined within a longer reorganisation of accumulation, class relations and Iran´s position in the world economy.
Die Vortragsreihe „Kapitalismus und Krieg“ wird von der AG Internationale Beziehungen und Politische Ökonomie (AB4 / AG Koddenbrock) an der Fakultät für Soziologie ausgerichtet.
