„Preila Project“ erzählt auf subtile Weise eine Geschichte, die uns in die Vergangenheit versetzt und zugleich mit Bildern der Gegenwart erweitert wird. Kuriose historische Fakten, utopische staatliche Ambitionen und eine lebhafte künstlerische Vorstellungskraft greifen ineinander und bilden ein vielschichtiges Narrativ.
Die Videoarbeit lädt dazu ein, in den idyllischen Ferienort Preila an der Ostsee in Litauen einzutauchen. Fragmentarische Erzählungen von Erholung und Langeweile werden dabei immer wieder von der Geschichte einer Schatzsuche in der Küstenstadt durchbrochen. Im Zentrum steht eine Episode aus dem Jahr 1998, als spekuliert wurde, dass das berühmte Bernsteinzimmer – im Zweiten Weltkrieg verschollen und oft als achtes Weltwunder bezeichnet – ausgerechnet hier entdeckt werden könnte.
Die historischen Ereignisse und kollektiven Erinnerungen in Litauen bilden die Inspirationsquelle und den Ausgangspunkt der Künstlerinnen. Zugleich fließen persönliche Kindheitserinnerungen in die Arbeit ein: Bilder von Polizeibeamten, Videokameras, Tauchern in Anzügen und Nachbarn mit funkelnden Augen. Diese Eindrücke verweben sich mit gegenwärtigen Perspektiven auf einen Ort, der heute von Ruhe und Erholung geprägt ist.
Die damaligen Ereignisse wurden ausführlich in der Presse dokumentiert. Unterschiedliche Akteure prägten die Geschichte – darunter der NSDAP-Gauleiter Erich Koch, der aus der Kurischen Nehrung stammende Zeuge Hanz Stančius und dessen Cousin, der Initiator der Suche, Richard Pietsch, sowie zahlreiche weitere Nebenfiguren. Gleichzeitig wurde kontrovers diskutiert, wem ein möglicher Fund des Schatzes zustehen würde – Litauen, Deutschland oder Russland.
In der Videoarbeit trifft so das Globale auf das Persönliche. Doch je näher man den Erzählungen einzelner Zeitzeugen kommt, desto mehr verliert die einst aufgeblähte Geschichte an Größe. Die Zuschauer*innen sind eingeladen, in diese vielschichtige Welt einzutauchen und eine melancholische, manchmal ironische Reise durch das persönliche und kollektive Gedächtnis zu unternehmen.

Preila Project subtly unfolds a story that transports us into the past while simultaneously expanding it through images of the present. Curious historical facts, utopian state ambitions, and a vivid artistic imagination intertwine to form a multilayered narrative.
The video work invites viewers to immerse themselves in the idyllic seaside resort of Preila on the Lithuanian coast. Fragmentary accounts of leisure and boredom are repeatedly interrupted by the story of a treasure hunt in the coastal town. At its center is an episode from 1998, when it was speculated that the famous Amber Room—lost during the Second World War and often referred to as the eighth wonder of the world—might be discovered here.
Historical events and collective memories in Lithuania serve as both the inspiration and the starting point for the artists. At the same time, personal childhood memories flow into the work: images of police officers, video cameras, divers in suits, and neighbors with sparkling eyes. These impressions intertwine with contemporary perspectives on a place now defined by calm and relaxation.
The events were widely covered in the press at the time. Various figures shaped the story, including the NSDAP Gauleiter Erich Koch, the witness Hanz Stančius from the Curonian Spit and his cousin, the initiator of the search, Richard Pietsch, as well as numerous secondary characters. At the same time, there was heated debate over who would have the right to any potential discovery of the treasure—Lithuania, Germany, or Russia.
In the video, the global meets the personal. Yet the closer one gets to the accounts of individual witnesses, the more the once-inflated story begins to shrink. The audience is invited to immerse themselves in this multifaceted world and embark on a melancholic, sometimes ironic journey through personal and collective memory.
